”Attitude is Everything!” Dr Manpreet Gulati

Attitude is the biggest and the most under-tapped and unrecognised of human attributes, well, certainly by ordinary people like you and me going about our daily lives. We often start off happy with dreams and ambitions but somewhere along the line we lose steam, get bored or just frustrated because of things we can’t change around us making us negative and unproductive. Eventually, we find ourselves in a vortex of turbulence, the Sea of Sargasso, where garbage keeps churning around us and we cannot get out of the situation. I suggest that we never succumb to this mind-set as this will most certainly guarantee you a very ordinary and mundane life. Such a present and a past will only perpetuate itself into the future. So this is how you get out of the ‘Sea of Sargasso’:

1. Search your inner being. What is it that fundamentally makes you? What do you stand for? What brings you in resonance with the universe? What are you here to change in this world? These soul-searching questions will give you a starting point to find out your mandate and purpose. Internal resonance to your fundamental frequency is crucial. What you do has to find alignment with who you are. It has to be a congruent outgrowth of the you inside of you.

2. Get interested! Get enthusiastic about who you are. Repeat it to yourself and indeed write it down to commit yourself. Doing that is powerfully reinforcing. No one will be interested in you or will find you interesting if you yourself are not. It is important to train and ‘role-play ‘ yourself into this character that you have dreamt yourself to be. You do have to hammer and tinker it in. In fact, this positive image that you paint of yourself, must stay with you throughout the day everyday, and must be mirrored with everyone you meet at all times, including when you meet you yourself! Thinking positively only for short bursts of time, as most of us usually do, is simply not good enough. It must be unconditional and always, or else it will not drive you to creativity and away from negativity and self doubt. Changing your image of yourself in your mind and your thoughts about you will most certainly change what’s coming and what kind of luck you generate for yourself. This is true of a new venture, financial situation, your relationships and academic or career ambitions. ‘Live and be the success you want see for yourself in this world’!

3. Resonate to strike a chord! When you think that your ambition and idea is in alignment with your inner core, is in keeping with your current life situation and is also scalable into the future and it is feasible to take steps, however small, in the correct direction, you most certainly have a winner. That is where your ‘twang’ will strike a ‘chord’ with others. You are now ready to test the idea with others. If it is an idea that has a human side and will appeal to them at a fundamental and deeper level, beyond the superficial, it will resonate. Never underestimate the power of small things. It is always a small nidus which begins a snowball which on reaching a critical mass rolls down the mountain as an avalanche and clearing all obstacles in its path.

4. Confront your fears with courage! Waiting to develop skills/knowledge or enough courage as an attitude is like perpetuating procrastination. Take affirmative action first if you believe in the idea. Confront your fears, do not back off! Listen to your sceptics, critics and even trolls, just enough to round off the corners and shape the plan. Don’t get affected by it negatively. Opening up yourself to scrutiny can be powerfully revealing to you, but do it only when you are ready. Scepticism is part of the package when you attempt to change paradigms. Take it in the stride. Don’t resist it. Use it.

5. Become interdependent. Finally, and most importantly, realise that you simply cannot do it on your own! You are an extension of your team and your team is an extension of you. You are another them and they are another you. While alignment of values is necessary, do value diversity of skills, thinking and methodologies. Let leadership evolve at several levels by delegating and then trusting. Driving a team takes internal security, a great measure of sense of abundance, intuition and judgement. Let this reflect who you are. It involves to a great deal, a sense of letting go and of giving and seeking personal happiness in the happiness of your team.

The longer I dwell on this, the more firm is my belief that essentially it is about your attitude, your point of view which will change your future and of those you wish to associate with and wish to serve. You have a choice you can exercise. So do dream up something substantial, something extraordinary by beginning small and unleashing your thoughts. Resonate, focus and persevere with courage. Because I know you can do it, and especially if you know it too!
