University proud sponsors of inaugural world health summit
The University of Cumbria is sponsoring the first World Health Innovation Summit on 10-11 March at The Halston, Carlisle.

The summit brings together health professionals to share their experiences, knowledge and expertise to improve health care and will have a specific focus on recruitment and workforce development issues in the region and beyond.

The university is the summit’s ‘thinking cap’ sponsor and will be promoting its work on digital health care solutions as well as its digital health continuing professional development and sustainable leadership programmes.

Sandra Booth, Pro Vice Chancellor for Enterprise, Business Development and Engagement, said: “The university is honoured to be involved in such a valuable event. Many challenges faced within the health economy in the county are not unique to the North West and apply across the country and even abroad. The university has a range of research and innovation projects on the go as well as courses that are specifically designed to help working professionals develop desired skills and knowledge for their own benefit as well as that of the region.”

In addition to sponsoring the summit, the university’s Professor Alison Marshall is a keynote speaker and will discuss how the Cumbria Rural Health Forum supports local communities.

The forum was formed to help address specific issues faced rural communities when accessing health and social care and looks to technology to provide the solutions. For example, they are currently trialling the use of video link between a sonographer in a district hospital and a remotely located fetal medicine consultant to potentially reduce the need for some pregnant women to travel for appointments. It will also help to upskill staff and improve local services.

Alison is speaking on Thursday 10 March at 11.25am-12.05pm.

The university offers a range of courses for professionals that can be fitted around work. These include digital health modules for health or social care professionals who are interested in working with technology. The modules are flexible and can be studied individually or as part of a degree or masters’ programme either part-time or by distance learning. Modules include ‘Use of Technology in Health and Social Care’ and mentoring support for students on a ‘Work-based Project’ within their practice.

The university offers post-graduate qualifications in leadership and sustainability. Executives from over 100 countries have attended the intensive residential courses in Britain’s beautiful Lake District.

Offerings include the Master of Business Administration (MBA) in Leadership and Sustainability with Robert Kennedy College, the Postgraduate Certificate in Sustainable Leadership, short executive courses and a Doctoral Programme.
